Jody grew up on a dairy farm in Dobson, NC. He has picked-up hay, primed tobacco, and cleaned stalls. In high school, he was a three-time state champion in running. Jody is no stranger to hard work and determination. Today, Jody Mitchell practices law with those same principles of early-to-rise, hard work, tenacity, and family values that he learned growing up in Surry County.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 2001 and his law degree from the Appalachian School of Law in 2004, where he was a Dean's List student and Cum Laude graduate.
Jody, his wife, and their young son are very active in church and church activities.
Renae Alderman Mitchell was born and raised in Galax, Carroll County Virginia. She graduated from Galax High School in 1999 with honors, and she had already taken classes through Wytheville Community College to enter Radford University as a sophomore. While at Radford she was a member of an academic fraternity as well as a leader of her sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha. In 2002, Renae graduated from Radford University with honors and a degree in Business Administration. Renae went on to attend Appalachian School of Law, where she met her husband and current law partner, Jody Mitchell. Renae graduated from Appalachian School of Law and passed the Virginia bar in 2005. From 2005 to 2006, Renae worked for Raquel A. Lyons, PA performing real estate title examinations until she married her husband Jody in 2006. In 2006, Renae began working for Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society, specializing in domestic violence, family, and bankruptcy law.
In 2008 Renae joined Lyons & Lyons, PC in Galax, Virginia to practice law with her sister and brother-in-law: Raquel Alderman Lyons and Nathan H. Lyons. The firm evolved to Lyons & Mitchell, PC in 2010 when Nathan H. Lyons become the Commonwealth Attorney for Carroll County Virginia. The firm remained as such until December 31, 2022. While with Lyons & Mitchell, PC, Renae specialized in family law, divorce, guardianships, adoptions, and bankruptcy law; however, her main focus was serving as guardian ad litem for children and incapacitated adults. Renae takes great pride in being able to give a voice to children and incapacitated adults who cannot speak and defend themselves.
In 2020, Renae obtained her North Carolina bar license and began working part time with her husband’s Dobson, North Carolina firm, Jody P. Mitchell, PA. Renae is now practicing law with Jody full time in Dobson North Carolina and looks forwards to continuing to serve the Virginia and North Carolina legal communities.
